Budgerigar most common Diseases
If budgies are provided with proper nutrition and care then they can live up to 18 years.Your bird should have a veterinary exam once a year for its good health.Here some diseases are given which are common in budgies.
Common Budgerigar Diseases
1-Scaly Face:
Symptoms:
A fungus grows on the beak, around the eyes, vent and legs of budgerigar.
Treatment:
This disease can be treated by covering with some lotion or oily material (Vaseline or similar). Its occurrence may be stopped by using one drop of ivermectin on the back of neck each year.
2-Canker of the Throat:
Symptoms:
Budgies wouldn't eat anything, Stretching of neck upwards hard to breath,cheesy deposits in throat.
Treatment:
Emtryl; 5 g per 5 liters of water and use it for 10 days.Make fresh after 4 days because it losses its effectiveness. Ronivet or sparmix as directed.
3-Sour Crop:
Symptoms:
Causes vomiting and throwing up seeds.
Treatment:
Condes crystals; mix the solution in water and dilute it to obtain a light pink color.Use this solution for 10 days. Condes crystal are poisonous.
4-Warms:
Symptoms:
Weakness and severe loss of condition of budgerigar, lower production and diarrhoea.
Treatment:
Nilverm or aviverm 3% solution in water 10/12ml in a litre of water or according to the instructions given by manufacturer. After 28 days give second dose.
5-Enteritis:
Symptoms:
Stained green around the vent area.It is a milder type.
Treatment:
terramycin; half gram per liter of water.Treat for about 10 days. Biomav B 1 level teaspoon for 100 ml of water.
6-Psittacosis:
Symptoms:
The disease can damage several body/organ systems.Birds may cough, sneeze or wheeze.Bird becomes sick rapidly and may appear fluffed up, lose interest in food, and become thin and weak.
Treatment:
Oxymav B, use as directed according to the strength of the disease.
7-Red mite and bird lice:
Treatment:
Invermectin; using a drop once a year at the back of the neck will protect the bird.Specific kinds of sprays may be used.
8-Air Sack mite:
Symptoms:
Asthma type wheeze.
Treatment:
Cover the cage of bird with some cloth with bird in it. Now spray with Pea Beau or Mortine or some other spray of similar kind.Keep the cage covered for 10 seconds.
9-French moult:
Symptoms:
Chicks are unable to grow their feathers.
Treatment:
Taking a little care is the best option to avoid the disease.
Clean the living place of the bird with a solution containing sodium hypochlorite. By using this cleaner 95% prevention of the disease can be achieved.
10-Megabacteria Avian Gastric Yeast:
Symptoms:
Diarrhoea weight loss fluffy & quiet.
Treatment:
Can be controlled with citric acid using 5 gm in 5 liters of water. Also citrus fruit may be used.
