Flammulated owl:Breeds in old montane pine woods, often in Ponderosa Pine and dose to open area.Nest usually in a woodpecker hole, more rarely in a natural cavity.Occasionally will use nest-boxes. 8-39 ft. up.

An unlined cavity.
Breeding season:
Begins mid-May to early June. Usually ends by late July. Single-brooded.
Eggs:
Usually 3-4 Elliptical to short subelliptical. Smooth and slightly glossy. white. 29 x 26 mm.
Nestling:
Altricial and downy. Down thick and white. Bill, legs, and feet. pinkish-flesh-colored. irides dark blackish-brown. Soon grayishwhite barring develops on upperparts, white below.
Nestling period:
Female broods, male brings food through day 12, then both hunt for food. Young leave nest at 21-25 days. Brood separates into two parts, each tended by one adult Independent of parents at 46-57 days.
