Lewis's Woodpecker Breeds on forest edge (especially Ponderosa Pine), or in groves and scattered trees.Lewis woodpecker Make Nest-hole in a tree-trunk. in large dead stub, or in tree limb; in deciduous or coniferous tree. 6-100 ft up. Regularly uses old nest sites and natural cavities. Sometimes several pairs have holes in one tree.

Nest: Cavity usually bored In dead wood. Entrance hole 2- 2½ in. diameter, usually circular. Cavity up to 30 in. deep, c. 4 in. across.

Breeding season: 
Lewis Woodpecker Breeding Season Begins mid-April in south to late May in north of range. Ends usually in July.

Lewis Woodpecker eggs: Usually 6-7, sometimes 5-9. Elliptical to sub-elliptical or oval. Variable in shape. Smooth and non-glossy. White. 26 x 20 mm.

Lewis's Woodpecker Incubation Period: By both sexes, with male at night and both alternating during the day? 12-14 days.
