Red-headed Woodpecker Habitat And Other Information

 (Melanerpes erythrocephalus)

Red-headed Woodpecker: Breeds in open and cultivated country with scattered trees,Nest hole in a tree-trunk, large limb, or stump; occasionally in telegraph pole, fence post or roof of house. Red-headed Woodpecker Cavity may be re used for second brood. Nest from almost ground level to 80ft. up.

Woodpecker Nest: Cavity usually bored in dead wood. Entrance hole 1-3/4 in. diameter. Cavity 8-14 in. deep, 3-4½ in. across. Excavated by both sexes.



Breeding season:
 Red-headed Woodpecker Breeding Season Begins late April in south to mid-May in north of range. Single- or double-brooded, and lost clutches are placed.Usually ends in August.

Red-headed Woodpecker Eggs:
 Usually 5 , sometimes 4-8. SubenipUcal , oval or elliptical Smooth and moderately glossy. White. 25 x 19 mm.

Incubation:
Red-headed Woodpecker laid Eggs at daily intervals. Incubation by both adults, beginning before completion of clutch. 12-14 days.
